Sonoma Barn

MICHAEL HENNESSEY ARCHITECTURE

This project is a complete conversion of a barn into a recreational building comprising a music room, exercise room, mezzanine, and restrooms. The structural system consists of an existing structural steel framed industrial building that was retrofitted with plywood shear walls and steel beams. A living screen of vines covers part of the south elevation, west elevation, and roof—acting as shading for the building to improve the thermal performance during the spring and summer. Two operable skylights were installed to evacuate warm air from the building. Fenestration was strategically placed to take advantage of the high sun and views.
